New Paste Options in Office 2010

Posted by: Mannie on: October 1 2010 • Categorized in: Excel,Office 2010,Word

Word 2010 includes a new Paste feature – the Paste Options Gallery, which puts a number of options for pasting at your fingertips.

As in earlier versions of Word, when you paste, you will see a Smart Tag that lets you select a variety of paste options.

As you hover over the options in the Paste Options gallery, the Live Preview feature temporarily displays your data as it will look if you select that option.

Viewing the Paste Options Gallery

To view the Paste Options gallery:

  1. Press the CTRL key or click the Smart Tag.
  2. Word will display the Paste Options Gallery:
  3. Hover over an option to preview your pasted data.
  4. Click an option to paste the data into your spreadsheet.

In addition to the Smart Tag, you can also access the Paste Options gallery in two other ways:

  • After copying, click the Paste drop-down arrow to display the Paste Options gallery.
  • The Paste Options gallery also appears on the right-click context menu.

Depending on the data that you are copying, you will see different options displayed in the Paste Options Gallery.   All available options are summarized in the table below:

Option Description
Keep Source Formatting Pastes the copied text without any formatting changes. (The copied text and the pasted text look the same.)
Merge Formatting Applies the font size and style to the pasted text to maintain uniformity in the document.
Keep Text Only Pastes text only with no formatting.
Picture Pastes the copied graphic as a picture.
Set Default Paste… Links to Advanced Word Options screen with Cut, Copy and Paste options.

I’m trying to paste within a Word doc, using Word 10 in Windows 7. The only paste option I see is ‘keep text only.’ I’ve gone into the setting and selected everything you suggest for options, but nothing changes. I can’t even copy tables (and really need to be able to do that…)The Paste Special option only shows two options, unformatted text and unformatted unicode text. PLEASE help!!
    Thanks,
    Liz

Liz – did you figure this out. I’m having exactly the same problem. The only difference is that everything used to work exactly as they say and it has stopped working now.

    Hi Liz

Did you work it out because I am having the same problem!? Can only paste with Keep Text Only and cannot figure out how to include the other options?! Argh, so annoying…

I haven’t come up with a definite answer on this, but I have researched it a bit and found a lot of people who claim that uninstalling a Skype add-on solves the problem. The add-on is called Click to Call. It reformats phone numbers in web browsers so that you can click them to make a telephone call. Several people who uninstalled Click to call said that Paste Options in all Office 2010 apps were fixed. Some said that it was a specific conflict with Skype’s Click to Call add-on and the Chrome browser.

I have also come across people who say they fixed the Paste Options problem by closing all browsers (not a permanent solution, but at least would narrow it to a browser problem), and one person who fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling Skype.

I have not been able to recreate the problem by installing the Click to Call add-on, so not sure if this is really a fix, but so many people online mentioned it that I thought I would pass it along.

I had exactly the same problem, and yes I had just installed Skype Click to Call and I use Google Chrome. I uninstalled Click to Call and all my Office paste options immediately started working again.

By uninstalling the Skype Click to Call, amazingly word paste options are back. Thanks to Mannie.

For those who do not want to uninstall the skype add-on, Skype has released a new version that fixes this bug. If you want it, go to http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/click-to-call/windows/ and click Download Now. I did this and my problem with the paste options was resolved. You will have to restart after the intall for it to take effect.
